a day in eats…

i figured, more for myself than anything else, it was time to document a complete day of eats. but before i dive into that, a little randomness:

i hope no one missed the “double mctwist 1260” wednesday night!?!?!

shaun white kicked some serious olympic bootay in the halfpipe… he is unbelievable!!

JUST SAYIN

ok that’s all… let’s get to the grub!

well i started with a cup o’ sludge in the awesomely tacky square dancing mug!

the other day when my friend nakia and i went on our whole foods lunch adventure, i picked up a few little things, one of them being chobani. i see it all over el mundo de blogs, but i had never tried it before (i usually eat stonyfield oikos or TJ’s greek yogurt), but since i was at whole foods i figured i’d give the chobani a whirl.

0% pomegranate chobani, 1 serving bare naked fit vanilla almond granola, and a few frozen organic cherries (also from whole foods)… overall a good combo, but i think i would have preferred it with regular yogurt instead of flavored.

i know i’ve said this before, but the bear naked fit almond vanilla granola is so good… check out the whole almonds in it!

nakia and i went for a walk during lunch today. look what greeted us!!!

the sun found portland!!

you know you’re from portland when……. you encounter the sun shining in february and say, “whoa, where did that come from??”

the 45 minute walk or so made for a great lunch adventure. adding that to the interval elipticizer workout i did at the gym this morning, i’m going to go ahead and admit that i feel good about my activity level today!!

i hadn’t packed lunch, so after our walk i stopped at Spoons and got their veggie wrap, which they say is served on lavash, but once i got it back into work and opened it up it was actually just a wheat tortilla… LAME!

despite getting screwed with the tortilla, this wrap was really good. they put a light curry sauce on it… i ate the first half with the tortilla, but the second half i opened up and just ate the guts.

about 3 p.m. i started to encounter a gentle but increasingly annoying growl in the tum, so i silenced the lil buggar with the other half of my pb&j larabar

yes, i had it closed up with a binder clip… i am so totally opposed to stale food… i don’t even like to risk it. SEAL IT UP!

when i got home i was hungry, but not quite as hungry as porter…

(no charge for the shot of my super cool retro kitchen floor)

he cracks me up when he eats!
totally sprawled out, face straight in the bowl…

the boy has no shame!!

anyhooo… i didn’t want to eat dinner at 5:30 b/c there’s no way i would last the rest of the night without getting into snack after snack after …. you get the idea.

so instead i had a snack

baby carrots with mango/peach salsa.

it was good, but random, and awkward to eat. baby carrots don’t scoop salsa very well…

i also had an un-pictured Tj’s light string cheese.

i knocked the last real world off the dvr, did some other stuff, ummm i guess i can’t really remember. clearly all i was thinking about was dinner, which as it turns out… was part deliciousness, part random.

random:

we love these little chippers! i suppose we should run it by the undisputed chip queen at GDW, but my guess is she would give them a thumbs up…

and for chips, i don’t think they have bad stats

and the deliciousness!!

dave’s killer bread, organic dijon, TJ’s artichoke hearts, TJ’s fire roasted red pepper, and feta mixed with a tiny bit of light sour cream (helps the feta become more like a spread, rather than crumbling and falling all over the place)

this sammy was really good! i had seen caitlin say a couple times that artichokes had a meatyness (obviously i’m not quoting her given that “meatyness” is definitely not a real word) that made them super satisfying. she’s right! plus they just taste so rich, even though they are so low in calories!

YUM!

i polished off the evening with a mock POMtini… sometimes you need a real POMtini… but tonight, just a little soda water, POM and splash of lime did the trick!

so there you have it… a day of every single thing that made its way into my belly.

how’d i do??

let’s go let’s go let’s GO!!

that’s what farley was saying this evening, when i strapped him into his harness for his FIRST WALK since having back surgery!!

we went for a short walk (although he wanted to cruise the entire city of portland)… i noticed after about a block that he was trying to go too fast, so he would kind of skip and pick up his right back leg b/c it couldn’t keep up. i decided that meant it was time to head back… baby steps little boy… baby steps.

if you look close, you can see the scar down his back… it’s no joke!

but that was this evening…

i really need to start with last night…

which is when some dudes came to deliver my new bed. once they got it set up i was thinking, ummm i’m not sure this is the bed that i ordered, but i second guessed myself, and didn’t say anything. so i went to bed last night, and immediately knew O MAR COD, this is NOT the bed i bought! it was as hard as a rock! i was SO annoyed, didn’t sleep well, and woke up this morning with a totally achey body!

i know, i know, such dramatics! but i am a soft bed girl, and simply cannot stand hard beds!

waking up on the wrong side of the bed on a wooden plank, i knew i needed two things:

SPICY OATS

COFFEE W/ ABE

work was nutso, so by the time i escaped to make the trek to khao man gai, i had no idea where my phone was, and never took a photo… but you can read all about nong and her vietnamese street food crack HERE, and it’s worth it… it was IN-CRED-IBLE, per the usual!!

i’d like to wipe the rest of the day from my memory, sooooo moving right along…

when i left the building today i was so excited to see some color sprouting from the bare wintery trees…

it’s mind bottling how you can see this…

then right next to it…

spring is a comin and there’s nada like spring in PTizzle!

i got home to find the bed fairy had solved our problems, and my SOFT heavenly pillow top bed was in the room and made… i seriously contemplated going to bed at 6 p.m.!

the new bed is significantly higher than the old one, so the side tables look lame, and the new bedding doesn’t really jive with the picture anymore (i know challise, the pictures screams IKEA)… so that needs to disappear too. it’s ok though… i am so excited about my new slumber zone!

farley on the other hand… he and monkey are NOT happy about the new bed height!

anne was one of the lucky ones today, and didn’t have to work, so she was kind enough to make dinner!

while she was doin her thang, my lunch was loooong gone and i was starvin, so i snacked on two sticks of crack

and some new baked chips anne scored today, with surprisingly decent health stats… for chips!

serving size = 20 chips
calories = 120
fat = 3
fiber = 2
protein = 2
(given the flavor is SALT n vinegar, we won’t talk about the sodium content… mmm k?)

i only had a couple chips b/c i wanted to make sure i was sufficiently hungry… anne was makin a bomb ass dinner!

from the new “cooking light“… anne made mine with feta (i don’t dig the blue fuzzy cheeses)

the buffalo “sauce” (anne made it more chunky like a pico/salsa) was SO good… and the brussels went perfectly with it (just cooked on the stove with a tiny bit of olive oil and salt/pepper)

delicioso!!!

well, that’s it! duty calls… i finally finished season 2 of Damages, so now i’m going to get a little closer to caught up by watching the first episode of season 3…

if you do not watch “Damages“… you need to get seasons 1 and 2 PRONTO. it’s genius!! and glenn close RULES!

peace

feelin the burn

well, i took the plunge!

noooo i’m not married… it aint gonna happen people!

but i did; however, get on the scale this morning… wrote the number down, subtracted from the goal and was left with a disgustingly large number.
ughhhhhhh… seriously!?!??!
do you ever stop and wonder… how did i get here??

BUT, that being said… i was proud of myself… b/c i marched out of the bathroom and got on with my day!!

a tip of the proverbial hat to mama pea for suggesting that i a) magic bullet up the spinach and almond milk for my smoothie before adding anything else and 2) shaking the magic bullet when it gets stuck (if anyone official from magic bullet reads this… i NEVER shook the magic bullet while using it… my friend suggested this and i told her i was pretty sure that was not recommended and that b/c i cared so much for my magic bullet, i would NOT engage in said activity… oh wait… like anyone official from anywhere reads this blog… hahahahahaha alas, it was fun to pretend!)

ANYHOOOO… the result…

– spinach
– chocolate almond milk
– greek yogurt
– blueberries
– ice

then continuing my productive morning, i packed my lunch!! look at me goooo!!

pretty good huh?
right, well, i never ate it… b/c i totally forgot the food cart “big ass sandwiches” (that’s right) was donating 100% of their profits and tips to the relief effort in Haiti today, i, well, i…. they were donating the profits to Haiti!

suffice it to say it was a big.ass.sandwich! i took off half the bread though… that’s gotta count for something, right??

ok so LUNCH = HEALTHY LIVING FAIL

BUT… i’m confident i made up for it when i hit the gym tonight… i was ready to roll, and elipticized my a** off for 25 minutes pretty much as hard as i could go with varying intensity for those 20 minutes, and then i switched it over to the treadmill (ughhhhhh the freaking treadmill) and walked for another 20 minutes, varying from walking fast at a mellow incline and then walking a little slower but at a much steeper incline…

I AM FEELIN THE BURN!!!

after the gym, i sucked down a LOT of water, stretched, and dove face first into dinner!

anne was super nice and made one of my favs… taco salads!

we snagged this salsa at whole foods tonight and it’s definitely a keeper!!

and in case anyone is wondering who makes the best guacamole in the history of the world… the answer is ANNE!

okayyyyy so now it’s thursday morning… for some reason my internet just went completely down last night, right before i posted… what the!?!?!?

but that’s ok b/c it allowed me to wake up STARVING this morning, and inspired to throw down a KATIE inspired banana hammock!!

perfectly ripe (interpretation slightly green) banana, drizzled with almond butter, dusted with dark chocolate cocoa powder and a few crushed up pretzels…

and i’m out…

dorm room fever

stay tuned for why i’m convinced it’s a real danger!

as for us, we’ve been kinda occupied…

i call him fuzzy…

there has been breakfast…

potty training…

getting to know each other…

really delicious lunch…

-one slice ezekiel toast with a wedge of laughing cow, avocado slices, and frank’s
-one slice ezekiel toast with almond butter and a drizzle of honey

then this afternoon haley told us all her classes for tomorrow were cancelled, so we decided to grab what i’m certain was a healthy and super nutritious quick and fake afternoon pick me up…

and made the trek to oregon state to get haley!!

upon our arrival haley informed us she had to register for classes so we could just come up to her room real quick and wait for her.

something immediately kind of churned inside me… i didn’t realize right away what it was, but upon entering haley’s room i realized it must have been my gag reflex getting limbered up!!

dorm room fever… here is why i believe it is
a) something you can really contract,
2) something that should be feared, and
d) THE reason i will never go in haley’s dorm room again!

BEHOLD:

not SO bad you say?? wait, here, come in closer…

O…..M…..G ‘nuf said!

i said, “RAMEN NOODLES???” and she proudly said, “i traded an easy mac for a ramen!!!”
ohhhh, wellllll, you are quite the master barterer!!

she saw me taking this photo and said, “hey, i have 8 a.m. class. i NEED coffee” … umm ok sure, i am not going to judge anyone for drinking coffee, but are you collecting cups to sit on the corner in hopes of making some extra money??? THROW THEM AWAY HALEY!

can you guess whether this bag ended up in the back of my car for the trip home… have you done even one load of laundry since september haley???

and finally… the real GEM…

so do we think they wash the utensils prior to eating with them, or just use them right off the floor!?!?!?

speaking of eating… while all i really wanted to do was find the nearest clinic and get a tetanus shot, we decided to grab some dinner before making the trip back to portland.

haley may have subjected us all to dorm room fever, but she did come through with a dinner recommendation.

cafe yumm is a cute little place right off campus, and it was YUMM (go figure)… i’m not sure what came first, the chicken whole bowl or the egg cafe yumm, but they are pretty similar, and equally yumm.

i would say cafe yumm might win simply b/c you can buy their yumm sauce to take home with you and enjoy whenever you want!! so of course i snagged two…

YUMM!!

i can eat the “whole bowl”???

so i’ve been absent a couple days. the short story is that it’s been a rough weekend, which started with too much of this:

photo-3

and ended with GUILT and FRUSTRATION… no photo necessary there.

anyway, i took some time this weekend. i know i have to give myself a break and just keep trying to do better, but sometimes it’s HARD. so i did some relaxing, thinking, and attempting to get back to center.

i did have a review of sorts to discuss though! i said a few weeks ago that i wanted to make an effort to lead a much healthier life, but that i did not want that quest to mean i had to give up being a part of the culture and the city that i love.

i reviewed an aspect of portland culture -here-, and had so much fun with it that i wanted to do it again!

enter, the whole bowl

Whole Bowl CR

i’d heard a lot about this portland food cart, but decided it was time to give it a whirl!
so anne and i braved a portland downpour, and headed that way for lunch.

the whole bowl is pretty much just that…

photo-61

it tells you what’s in it…

photo-20

– brown rice
– sour cream
– olives
– avocado
– cilantro
– tali sauce
– cheddar cheese
– salsa
– black & red beans

so i ordered it straight up (no additions or deletions)…

photo-71

i mixed it all together, and dove in…

photo-81

i was a little worried about the “tali sauce” given that it’s a “secret”… i wasn’t sure if it had any sort of cream in it, which would make it a little heavy for me… but i heard the guy behind me order it “dairy free” and that only eliminated the sour cream and cheese. i was curious about the “tali sauce” so i read up on it and it seems it is vegan as well as gluten free!! i was SO excited to hear that b/c i knew that meant it obviously was not made with a heavy cream, and that’s excellent news b/c the tali sauce IS EXCELLENT!

i was also a little worried about whether the one bowl of food would be filling… ummm no problems there! i was completely full, and stayed that way for a long time.

yep, i ate THE WHOLE BOWL, and it was fantastico!!

photo-91

i said above that i took some time to CENTER this weekend, so i want to close with the following:

i actually started thinking about this the other day at work when i was looking out one of our office windows.

i looked east and found:

photoz

extremely stormy weather

then to my surprise i looked west and found:

photo-1

beautiful blue skies!

i sat there for a minute thinking about how much prettier the blue sky was, i even started to zone out, when someone else came into the room and called me out on my window gazing. i pointed out to him how strange it was that the sky looked so miserable to the right, and so beautiful to the left.

and then he said, “yes, but look at what is straight ahead”…

photo-2

the rainbow

i realized i’d been so wrapped up in considering blue skies v. thunderstorms that i completely missed the center, which was right in front of me.

so tonight i leave with this:

i have to remember that balance is the center. i too often get caught in the extremes… feeling dark and stormy and then wanting to swing completely the other way and find bright blue sky.

when in fact… the rainbow exists between the extremes… in the center

don’t say goodbye… say khao man gai!

well, i’m starting with a confession (which seems like it could become a trend)… i was supposed to attend a networking event tonight, but after having this kind of day:

deskjpg

i decided, for my sanity, to skip the networking, in favor of this:

saladjpg
(happy hour size avocado and mango stack salad… minus the fried won tons, which i set aside)

and… one of my best friends…

dirty-martini
(i didn’t take this photo, but it was too dark at henry’s to get a good photo of my actual best friend… so i figured this stand in would do the trick)

anyway, since i started this bloggy chapter of my life, i’ve been thinking a lot about BALANCE, what it really means for me, and how best to achieve it in different parts of life.

so the other day i was thinking about portland. i looooove this city! i love the people. i love the culture. i caught myself starting to think that i was going to “miss out” on so much b/c i need to be on a diet, and i need to be strict, and i need to do this and that.

wait wait wait… is that really BALANCE??

so i challenged myself… find a way to take an aspect of portland culture and BALANCE it for myself.

one thing that came to mind is the food cart scene. it’s HUGE in portland. carts line various streets in different neighborhoods of portland, serving foods from all around the world. one strip of carts is right outside my building…

2732378559_c968549fb0

now i’m not going to pretend like i have not given my share of money to this portland foodie paradise, and maybe it would be best for me to give up the scene altogether… just say peace out! but, actually, i don’t think that’s the best way to achieve balance.

now, some things about the carts, i think everyone could live without:

CAUTION, extremely unhealthy food photo approaching…

08_41_burgers_brunchbox

ok seriously… a huge burger with grilled cheese sandwiches for buns???

or this place:

3857546591_e34bf0bf8f

“side cart” was born, i believe, as a companion to its neighbor “brunch box” (which serves the burger above) b/c brunch box was churning out grease a plenty, but did not have a FRYER. the nerve of them! so side cart’s menu consists of all the fryer required side item like mac n cheese bites, tots, fried okra etc…

ok you get the point.

so i got to thinking about it, and i decided that my interest in the portland food cart scene was likely more about wanting to give myself the freedom to experience an aspect of portland culture, and less about wanting to eat something that isn’t good for me. i came to the conclusion that if my ultimate goal is a life of balance, then rather than just saying, “food carts are bad and must be punished,” i should turn my interest in the culture toward finding healthy options, and carts practicing sustainability etc.

once my mind was made up, i decided to do some research… within minutes i had a hit and a destination!

so, finally (you probably thought i’d never get to the point),

here’s the skinny on my newest portland food cart find, perfect for living a life in balance!!

photo-2

this woman rocks! she basically serves ONE dish, based on the common street food of bangkok, “khao man gai”

it’s chicken and rice with her special sauce, and a side of a very light broth/soup. her little handwritten menu even tells you all the ingredients she has used to cook up her little bundle of heaven (in short, the worst thing is that she uses some sugar when she boils her chicken)

i say “bundle” b/c, this is how you receive your khao man gai…

photo-3

isn’t it just adorable???

once you unwrap the little bundle…

photo-4

you see that little cup of sauce? oh, you can’t really get a good shot? let me help you…

photo-5

the sauce, oh nong how i love your sauce… sweet chili, garlic, ginger (lots of ginger)… word on the street is that she could retire if she would bottle this sauce. i must say, SO TRUE!

so after sampling the sauce, i knew there was only one thing left to do…

photo-6

dump the sauce and chow!

there’s one thing you could argue is lacking from this dish but it’s NOT taste! nong is a genius of simplicity. the chicken and rice with the sauce and cilantro is simple, but so full of flavor and scrumptiousness!! for a balanced meal it could use more veggies, but hey, i wouldn’t kick khao man gai out of bed for eating crackers being light on ruffage!

so while at first i thought i had to say goodbye… instead i say, KHAO MAN GAI
